Implementation of the overall restructuring programme has resulted in an improved organisational structure, which will enable us to move forward in a dynamic and innovative way. £9.65m This year, we made good progress with the implementation of the BGS People Strategy through delivery of key actions within the ‘People in Action’ plan. Some of the key achievements include ▪▪ supporting staff with the relocation to the new Lyell Centre in February 2016 ▪▪ the development of a dedicated learning and development plan where there is an increased focus on leadership development across the organisation ▪▪ management of the HR aspects of the office move for the Belfast site ▪▪ improved recruitment practices through delivery of workshops and the introduction of revised recruitment documentation to better guide managers through the process ▪▪ progress with the implementation of improvement actions relating to our Athena SWAN equality and diversity plan, including improved monitoring of equality and diversity across HR practices and the delivery of ‘unconscious bias’ training to all managers and individuals in roles that support staff development. At the BGS, we believe that these achievements are attributable to our way of working, which is based on highly skilled and dedicated teams, strong collaborative working across teams and departments and a lot of hard work from focused and flexible people who can rise to a challenge. Additionally, underpinning the above is a culture based on our core values of ‘impartiality, knowledge and societal impact’ that reflect the beliefs of our staff and guide how we work together. Estates It is recognised that research lies at the heart of what we do and we strive to provide an estate and infrastructure that support the BGS’s core aims in the most efficient and sustainable way possible whilst working within government policies. In 2015/16, we completed work on the £21 m Lyell Centre project in Edinburgh, which provides modern, open-plan, energy-efficient facilities. Relocation of staff from Murchison House and Loanhead was completed during February. The new buildings are shared with Heriot-Watt University and provide the ideal environment for research collaboration. As part of our plan to increase opportunities to work with others, lease agreements with Cardiff University were finalised. Suitable accommodation has now been identified and it is anticipated that BGS Wales will relocate during 2016/17. Maintaining the existing estate, as the largest of all of NERC’s centres, is a core Estates function. The year saw significant investment with over £1 m spent at the Keyworth site in order to ensure that we remain compliant and efficient.
