Annual Science Review 2015-2016

Inside the BGS Finance The financial year 2015/16 was a successful one, bringing in external funding of £21.7 m and managing the corporate finances to a near-balanced position (small deficit). This was whilst delivering a restructuring exercise during the year as part of the staffing plan. During 2015/16 we received £22.71 m from NERC to provide for both the funding of core strategic science programmes and a contribution to infrastructure. The NERC allocation, taken together with the competitively won NERC funding, accounted for approximately 55 per cent of non-capital funding. We earned approximately 45 per cent (£21.7 m) of non-capital budget from external sources. Research commissioned by customers through externally funded projects accounted for £16.75 m. Externally won projects enhanced the science programme through funding, ideas, data and review and made a vital contribution to infrastructure. In 2015/16 this income included revenue from various sources including over £4 m from government departments, £11.7 m from foreign, public and private sectors and £1m from European funding. There has started to be a redirection of the funding from NERC towards major initiatives such as ESIOS (Energy Security Innovation and Observing System for the Subsurface). NERC also provided capital funding of £9.6 m including £7.3 m towards the construction of the Lyell Centre in Edinburgh, which was completed on time and to budget. Human resources A priority focus for the Human Resources (HR) team this year was a detailed review of the workforce plan, resulting in the development of an overall restructuring programme. This Did you know? In addition to our staff the BGS supports 100 PhD students in collaboration with 40 universities. 26  Annual science review
