Annual Science Review 2015-2016

Northern Ireland The Geological Survey of Northern Ireland (GSNI) is based in Dundonald House in Belfast on the Stormont Estate. GSNI is staffed by scientists from BGS and is an office within the NI Department of the Economy (DfE). The GSNI’s primary aim is to provide geoscience information and services to inform decision making to support the economy, balancing this with advising Northern Ireland government departments on protection of the environment and landscape. Monitoring abandoned mines Northern Ireland is home to over 2400 abandoned mine workings vested in the Department for the Economy (DfE). A comprehensive mine-monitoring programme is being carried out by the GSNI to assess the risk to the public, property and infrastructure. One area highlighted during 2015/16 was the risk associated with the Red Hall brine field, south of Larne, County Antrim.
