Scotland BGS Scotland is based in the new Lyell Centre in Edinburgh, a major joint BGS/Heriot-Watt University research centre for geological, petroleum and marine sciences. Research in the Centre will play a key role in finding pragmatic solutions and providing evidence-based informed and reliable opinions in the areas of energy supply, environmental impact and global climate change, where inputs have traditionally been polarised. Scottish groundwater report Groundwater is used across Scotland for drinking, agriculture, industry (including the bottled water and whisky sectors) and recreation (including irrigating golf courses). As well as playing an important role in Scotland’s economy, groundwater is also vital to maintaining a healthy environment. As the leading source of information on groundwater in Scotland, we have published a new joint report with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), called Scotland’s Aquifers and Groundwater Bodies. The report shows the main aquifer groups across Scotland, from Precambrian to Quaternary, which were defined using our most recent geological mapping. It provides an up-to-date overview of the hydrogeology and baseline groundwater chemistry of each aquifer, based on new data collection and a synthesis of many years of applied groundwater research. It also describes the process of delineating groundwater bodies, which are the basis for groundwater management in Scotland under the Water Framework Directive. Did you know? The BGS provides essential information on groundwater levels, which helps the UK government prepare for flood events. 10  Annual science review
